Direct sunlight delivers roughly 10,000 lux or more onto the glass surface. A 500-nit panel — perfectly readable indoors — washes out because reflected ambient light swamps the backlight. The working rule: an outdoor-readable panel needs to be several times brighter than any indoor part, which pushes real sunlight-readable modules into the 800–1500+ cd/m² range depending on mounting and shading.

Trade-offs: Power, Heat and Backlight Lifetime
Every extra nit costs power and heat. Backlight current scales roughly linearly with luminance, so a 1500-nit module may draw 3–4× the current of a 400-nit one of the same size. Plan the thermal path — metal frame, airflow or reduced duty cycle — and check backlight lifetime data at the higher current, not at the nominal rating.
Optical Bonding for Outdoor Contrast
Even a bright panel loses contrast to reflections at the air gap between cover glass and cell. Optical bonding fills that gap: it typically recovers a large share of outdoor contrast and eliminates internal fogging in humid, temperature-cycling environments.
